STAR SAND features a star-studded Japanese cast and original music by Academy Award-winner Sakamoto Ryuichi.

The scene of the film is an island in Okinawa in April 1945 and present-day Tokyo.

Two deserters – one Japanese, the other American – come to live together in a cave. They vow never to commit an act of violence again, though the war is raging throughout Japan.

They are joined by a 16-year-old girl who looks after them. All goes well until the Japanese deserter’s elder brother, a fanatic soldier, comes to live with them. Eventually, a violent scene occurs. Three of the four inhabitants of this cave end up dead.

It is not until the present day that we discover who died in the cave back in 1945 … and why.

STAR SAND is not only a profound film about non-violence and compassion, but also a thrilling mystery that affects us all in a world where war is rampant and peace is as elusive as ever.

The ASIA TIMES has written … “By bravely recasting war’s so-called cowards as the real heroes – the ‘true messengers of peace’ – Pulvers’ first feature film is a poignant reminder that, even in periods of hatred and brutality, there is also the chance for hope.”
