This event is a two-day course designed to help you learn how to provide initial support to someone who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.

Face to face training -Inperson. This course teaches participants how to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or Mental health crisis, until professional health is received or the crisis resolves. Course participants will learn about the signs and symptoms or common Mental health problems in adults, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem and the treatments and supports available.

Course Content
The standard MHFA course teaches members of the public how to assist someone who is developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.

Developing mental health problems covered
* Depression
* Anxiety problems
* Psychosis
* Substance use problems

Mental Health crises covered.
* Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
* Non-suicidal self -injury
* Panic attacks
* Traumatic events
* Severe psychotic states
* Severe effects from Alcohol or other drug use
* Aggressive behaviours

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems in adults
  • Use evidenced-based action plan to initiate a mental health first aid conversation
  • Assess for a range of crisis situations and initial support
  • Understand the prevalence and impact of mental illness, risk factors and treatments and support available
  • Apply self -care practices as a Mental health first Aider.
