Event description

Description

The Ocean Crusaders St Helena Island Clean Up will be a fun family day for everyone to enjoy one of Brisbane's magical Bay Islands. This Clean Up is part of the Three Island Clean Up that we have been conducting over the last few months courtesy of a grant from Energex. Already we have cleaned the neighboring islands of Mud and Green removing tonnes of debris. Now it is St Helena's turn. However this event is more than just a clean up.

We are inviting anyone and everyone to this new event. If you have your own boat, bring it out, anchor off the Western Shore and come onto the island and meet us in the park. If you need a ride, we will have Cat'oNine Tails and the Moreton Bay Education Center Vessels at our service to ferry people over. Pending numbers we may have additional vessels available.

The full details of what will be offered during this event will be detailed once our final permits are approved. However one thing for certain, we will be cleaning the island.

St Helena Island is a heritage-listed island in Queensland, Australia, 21 kilometres (13 mi) east of Brisbane and 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) east of the mouth of the Brisbane River in Moreton Bay. Originally used as a prison, it is now a national park. Local Australian Aborigines called the island Noogoon but it was renamed St Helena after an aboriginal named Napoleon was exiled there in 1826. The island is visible from the mainland, particularly the suburbs of Wynnum, Manly and Lota. It has its own permanent water supply, a spring in the centre of the island. Many migratory birds use the island as a watering hole; it forms part of the Moreton Bay and Pumicestone Passage Important Bird Area, so identified by BirdLife International because it supports large numbers of migratory waders, or shorebirds

For those of you needing a ride, book your tickets and then meet your vessel at 0900 on the public pontoon off William Gunn Jetty (Behind Tides Restaurant). You will be unloaded at the island's jetty and walk up to the Ocean Crusaders Marquee where you will be handed your cleaning equipment and you can set off in search of the most unwanted treasure the world has.

There will be activities for the children on the island to keep them entertained. We will also have some prizes to give away which will be drawn before heading back to the mainland. We endeavor to have you back on the mainland by 1600.

You will need solid shoes for the clean up part of the event. Bring your swimmers as there is a beautiful little beach to swim at. Bring your reusable water bottle as you can refill it out on the island. Don't forget to be sun smart and if you are one of the keen ones that wants to get deep into the mangroves, wear long sleeves.

Please pre-register for the event via the tickets section as we need to know how many people are coming to ensure there are enough boats.
