Event description

Description

Students for Sensible Drug Policy Victoria & Australian Psychedelic Society will be presenting a drug policy reform discussion and Q&A that will focus on the results and recommendation of the Parliamentary inquiry into drug law reform. We are organising a stellar panel of politicians and experts in Victorian & Australian drug policy including those on the inquiry committee.

Speakers on the night include:

Fiona Patten is the founder and leader of REASON, and a Member of the Victorian Legislative Council for the Northern Metropolitan region. She came to politics after 20 years of lobbying for the rights of organisations involved in the sexual rights movement – including small businesses, sex workers, HIV/AIDS organisations, adult media and online anti-censorship groups. Fiona has been an ardent supporter of progressive drug policies and in her term as an MLC has been instrumental in policy change, as a pivotal member of the both the Drug Law Reform the Supervised Injecting Centre Inquiries.

Geoff Howard is a member of the Australian Labor Party and has represented regional Victoria since 1999. With a background as a teacher, local councillor and Mayor, Geoff was the Chair of the Inquiry into Drug Law Reform, joining other Committee members on a travel tour which included Portugal, Vancouver and the U.K. Geoff has since publicly supported pill testing and the supervised injecting centre, calling on the Andrews Government to implement these reforms.

Nina Springle is the first Greens representative for the South Eastern Metropolitan Region in the Victorian legislative Council, elected in 2014. She has recently become the Victorian Greens spokesperson for Health policy, replacing Colleen Hartland as a supporter of the drug law reform movement through the Greens’ positive policies, including decriminalisation and harm reduction.

-more speakers to be announced-

This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to educate themselves further in drug policy, query any aspect of the inquiry or drug policy in general or find out how to get more involved in changing our current drug policies.

The event will be held at the University of Melbourne - the specific location will be confirmed and announced closer to the date.

Light refreshments will be provided on the night.
