Event description

Description

The proposed activity is an academic writing workshop and retreat for SRS members who are working either on finishing a journal article for publication or those who are writing a thesis. The activity aims to provide these students with an opportunity to focus on the writing component of their research, in a structured, collaborative environment, away from the usual distractions of their routine scholarly life. As a writing-focused activity, sessions over the course of four and a half days will include a pre-retreat workshop by Dr David Rowland from the UQ Student Services. The topics to be discussed will range from writing effectively and turning papers into a thesis to incorporating tables and figures, and references effectively. During the retreat, participants will be allowed to have “free writing” sessions, and oral presentations of work to the group for sharing of feedback.

Dr Rowland from will be providing a post-retreat seminar to give special advice to the students. A guest academic will also give a talk on his experience as an editor in Journals.

Group activities will also be held during this retreat to set a fun and relaxing atmosphere and to build connections among members.

Retreat fee: $50

Workshops on 26 and 30 October 2017: FREE
