Event description
Wildlife surveys on your doorstep!

About this Event

We are very excited to announce our second Gold Coast BioBlitz! This is an opportunity for experienced and amateur nature lovers to spend a few hours with an expert and look for the wonderful wildlife in the biodiversity hot spot that is Springbrook on December 4th, 5th and 6th.

If you have an interest in the hinterland and its fascinating plants and creatures, this is the event for you. Spend the weekend in Springbrook with the family and/or friends as there will be something to do for everyone!

Book in and enjoy a morning, afternoon or evening of wildlife research! Think birds, reptiles, echidnas, gliders, crayfish, bandicoots, fish, glow worms, macropods, flora, frogs, bats and more! Small survey groups of 8 will team up with leading scientists and head out into nature to learn observational skills and how to properly identify different species.

This year there will be a FREE basecamp program with 30+ activities, including kids crafts, presentations, workshops, book launch by Damian White and Narelle Power, Museum displays and our friends from Tamborine Mountain Landcare Inc. will be running an environmental bookshop for the whole weekend so that you can walk away with the right resources! Oh, did we mention there will be yoga classes as well?

Tickets will go on sale in October 30th, 2020!

ACCOMMODATION

If you have late night or early morning surveys, or just fancy making a weekend of it, accommodation is available!

  • Camping spot: Pay per person per night, shared bathroom facilities. $25 p.p.p.n.
  • Bunk bed in dormitory style rooms (a max of 6 people per room, a whole bunk to yourself, shared bathroom facilities) $25 p.p.p.n.
  • Book your own private accommodation elsewhere on the mountain.

MEALS AT THE BASECAMP

You will have option to purchase meal tickets ($15 per meal) for the following meal times:

  • Breakfast: Saturday and Sunday (hot food)
  • Lunch: Saturday and Sunday (Set meal, there will be a vegan and gluten free option)
  • Dinner: Friday and Saturday (Set meal, there will be vegan and a gluten free option)

You are NOT allowed to bring your own meals to Koonjewarre and you HAVE to pre-purchase your meals for the event!

HOW TO BOOK YOUR TICKETS?

Take not of your survey's difficulty grade!

Easy - easy terrain/steady pace/short distance

Medium - maybe some slippery rocks/steep bits/further to travel

Hard - moderate terrain with obstacles such as rocks, logs, long grass/may require some scrambling

Mountain Goat - difficult terrain/going off the path, scrambling and climbing, very steep ground

  • Example A: Peter (29) wants to join the BioBlitz for the whole weekend. He chooses the full weekend accommodation and meal package ($150). He then selects individual survey tickets; one for the Friday night ($15), one survey ticket for Saturday morning ($15), one for Saturday night ($15) and one for Sunday morning ($15). He won't purchase a ticket for the Saturday afternoon as he is keen to sit in on some of the workshops at the basecamp (FREE!). His BioBlitz cost will be $210. Peter reckons that's a pretty good deal for a full weekend of flora and fauna goodness.
  • Example B: Virginia (68) is keen to join 2 surveys on the Saturday. The Saturday morning surveys starts at 5:30AM so Virginia chooses to stay the night at Koonjewarre on Friday so she doesn't have to get up very early to get to the event. She selects the Friday night camping option ($25) and then books the Saturday morning Mammal Trapping ticket (easy grade) ($15) and the Saturday afternoon Botany ticket (easy grade) ($15). Because of her bad knee, she can't join the Medium and Mountain Goat grade surveys. She also takes out 3 meal tickets for Saturday Breakfast ($15), Saturday Lunch ($15) and Saturday Dinner ($15) as she is going to stay in the evening to join some presentations (FREE!). Her BioBlitz cost will be $100.

CHILDREN ARE MOST WELCOME

This is a family friendly event! However, children need to be under supervision at all times. Before you purchase survey tickets for children, make sure the survey is age appropriate. Check the advised age at the top of each individual ticket description.

For children of 3 years and under, accommodation and catering are FREE!

Surveys are not really suitable for children of 3 years or younger. If you plan to attend a survey and leave your child behind, please make sure they are left with a responsible adult.

SAFETY FOR YOURSELF AND OTHERS

Please take into account your physical abilities whilst purchasing tickets. Please make sure to read each individual ticket description carefully as this will mention if it is easy, medium, hard or mountain goat. Don't overestimate your abilities as you will be out in the bush for multiple hours! There are plenty of free presentations and workshops at our basecamp throughout Saturday and Sunday so you will be able to enjoy the event even if you can't join our surveys.

COVID SAFE

We are following the COVID-Safe Event Checklist for events of up to 1000 people during this event. We will have a COVID entry where you have to scan the QR code to be able to enter the event space and confirm that you don't show any symptoms, haven't not been in a COVID hotspot in the last 14 days and some other questions. There will also be a COVID Controller on site to make sure that everyone adheres to our COVID safe plan. Hand sanitiser will be available at 10 different locations at our event for you to use.
