Event description

Description

Artisanal woodcrafter Carol Russell has been moved by the characteristics of the Hydrowood timber salvaged from the cold depths of Lake Pieman on West Coast of Tasmania.

Her first Sydney workshop is supported by Hydrowood and Design Tasmania especially for DESIGN-MADE, join us for a special opportunity to learn from a talented Australian maker.

This class is an introduction to using carving tools and getting the feel of working with Hydrowood. Carol will cover basic carving techniques as well as design, timber characteristics, and tool sharpening. You will take at least one hand carved spoon home with you. Aboslute begginers welcome.

Tasmanian-born, she is conscious of the history between the forests and the Hydro Electric Commission. The battle for control of the region of the Pieman River still looms large in the state’s memory and the ancient trees standing in the misty waters of the lake serve as sentinel reminders.

The properties of the timber being salvaged from its depths have an almost mystical quality, and to work with them is a unique experience. The beauty of these indigenous species such as Tasmanian Blackwood, Celery Top Pine, Blackheart Sassafras, and Huon Pine has been enhanced by their time beneath the surface.

Limited to 10 particpants each session.

Book now for this rare opportunity to work with Carol, crafting spoons from Hydrowood timber.

Workshop fee includes all materials and tools.

You must be 18 or over to join this workshop.

ABOUT HYRDOWOOD

Below the waters of Lake Pieman on Tasmania’s west coast lies a treasure hidden for over 25 years. An ancient forest lost to the deep, dark waters. Lost, that is, until today.

This isn’t recycled wood already used and full of rusty bolts and nails. And it isn’t reclaimed wood found on a musty forest floor, years dead and scavenged from amongst the leaf litter.

Wood that craftsmen and master builders dream of working with. Wood with a story to tell, a character like no other and in quantities thought never to be seen again.

ABOUT DESIGN TASMANIA

In 1976 Gary Cleveland presented a vision: “to establish in the minds of a large proportion of the world’s population that the word ‘Tasmania’ is synonymous with good design and reliable craftsmanship.” Forty years on, Design Tasmania remains committed to that vision by supporting, promoting and guiding designers and master artisans on a local, national and international platform.
