I get nervous meeting new people. Will I fit in?

Absolutely! Speed Mating is designed with shy and anxious guests in mind. Our activities are structured to be low pressure, and everyone is there to make friends and practice social skills, not to compete or judge. You can participate at your own pace and in your own way.

Question 2

What happens during the event?

The evening is divided into three rounds of gentle warm up activities: Bubbly group conversations, Short and friendly 1x1 introductions and then the chance to practice the skills you learnt in the first two rounds. Each activity is carefully timed and structured, so no one feels  overwhelmed.

I’m not great at talking to new people. What if I run out of things to say?

That’s totally normal! We provide conversation prompts and exercises to help you get started and as we proceed, some tips and tricks to get the most from your conversations.

Is this a dating event?

Accepted Answer

Not at all! Speed Mating is about friendships and community, not dating or hookups. It’s a safe and welcoming space where you can meet others who genuinely want to make connections.

What if I need a break?

Accepted Answer

No problem. There will be short breaks given during the evening, and you’re welcome to step outside or just relax at your own pace. Everyone’s comfort is super important.

I’m neurodivergent. Is this event for me?

Accepted Answer

Please keep in mind this event can be a little loud and may some include bright lights, so if thats not what you are looking for, keep a look out for our ‘neurodivergent editions’ Speed Mating which are held at Thorne Harbour Health Collingwood. They are held roughly every quarter.

How do I get there and what time should I arrive?

The event is held in the Back Bar at The Laird Hotel. Please arrive by 6:45 pm so we can start at 7:00 pm. The venue is welcoming, familiar, and easy to navigate. Front doors of The Laird open at 6:00pm.

How much does it cost?

Tickets are either $10 dollars for a solo ticket or you can get the buddy bundle where you can bring a friend for $15. There are also free financial hardship tickets available for those who need it.

What if I feel awkward or overwhelmed?

That’s completely normal! Everyone feels a bit anxious at first. You can go at your own pace, participate as much or as little as you like, and the structured activities make it easy to follow along. Morgan and the Thorne Harbour Health volunteers team are there to support you.

How can I make the most of the night?

Come curious, open, and ready to share a little about yourself. Remember: equal talk time is encouraged, and listening is just as important as speaking. Focus on enjoying the moment and connecting, not on being ‘perfect’.
