This workshop is presented by speech pathologists on the critical link between speech, language and literacy.

About this Event


Nicole Schaumloffel , speech pathologist, will share the importance of, and inter-relationship between speech, language and literacy. The following key areas will be discussed:

The relationship between speech, language and literacy.

What is speech? Why do we need it for literacy

What is language? Why do we need it for literacy

Language Comprehension

Phonological Awareness

What is Synthetic Systematic Phonics?

Practical strategies for the classroom

Special populations

  • Dyslexia (what to look for, how to help)
  • Children with additional needs (Language Disorder, ID, ASD, CCN)

Nicole is a speech pathologist who graduated from Speech Pathology at Flinders University with honours in 2012 and stepped straight into a career in early intervention with children on the Autism Spectrum. Nicole has worked in-home and in early intervention centres as a behaviour therapist, Speech Pathologist and manager. She has trained in the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and has used it extensively with a range of age groups. Nicole has spent time in a specialist Literacy and Numeracy clinic using science-based interventions to accelerate learners and she is passionate about providing the best possible evidence-based practices to those she works with. She is currently studying a Masters of Education- Applied Behaviour Analysis at Monash University and takes a special interest in sharing ABA with other Speech Pathologists, as well as education and health professionals. Nicole is skilled at working with children with challenging behaviours or limited attending skills who have had difficulty accessing traditional speech therapy sessions. She is particularly interested in supporting children with speech and literacy development using science based intervention to support learning.

Intended Audience:

This workshop is suitable for special education, early childhood, junior primary, primary, secondary educators, including assistants, and parents.
