The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders is an independent human rights expert that is appointed by the UN Human Rights Council. The current Rapporteur, Michel Forst, is conducting an official visit to Australia to assess the environment in which human rights defenders are currently operating.
This meeting will focus on the general situation of human rights defenders in Australia. The Special Rapporteur will also be holding specific meetings with defenders of environmental, refugee and indigenous rights.
Please note that the Special Rapporteur focuses on the treatment of human rights defenders themselves, rather than the issues affecting people for whom human rights defenders advocate. As such, the Special Rapporteur would be interested in hearing about any issues or challenges which affect your work in protecting and promoting human rights in Australia.
