Event description

Description

The Spark POPUP STEAM Space & Fish Tank are free events for Year 7, 8 & 9 students, held over two days - Wednesday 18th & Thursday 19th October 2017 - at the MAAS Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo.

These two days form part of the Spark Festival - a 10 day community festival in October that connects technology, people, ideas & resources across the Sydney innovation ecosystem.

Please note each school can bring up to 25 students to each day.

Day One - Wednesday 18th October 10.00am - 2.00pm

The Spark STEAM POPUP Awareness Space is fully immersive, exciting and a dynamic educational experience where students will discover the delights of the latest in science & technology and creative entrepreneurship in our POPUP space.

Students will get a chance to observe drones fly and do cool tricks, interact with robots, make working lamps, print their own 3D objects (to take home!) and learn to code their own iPhone app, emoticon or chat bot.

The Coding Zones (Option to combine this with Day 1)

2 x 90 minute sessions at 10:15 and 12:30

This event will be presented by a range of providers. Last year’s workshops were run by Code Camp, the Girls Programming Network and Grok Learning.

The 90-minute classes will be suitable for first-timers who have never coded (who will get to code an emoticon, a chatbot or flags around the world), to those who want to build something just a little more complex like an app. The app will then be sent to the school afterwards for the children to download. All computers and equipment will be provided.

Please note you need to register your interest for THE CODING ZONE by selecting the appropriate ticket

Day Two - Thursday 19th October 10.00am - 2.00pm

The Fish Tank will provide a special opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to sharpen their business ideas. Fish Tank is for those students who have already been introduced to the idea of entrepreneurship and want to further that knowledge by exploring how to create a business model and learn how to make their ideas fly.

Entrepreneurial Workshops: Students will participate in creative design thinking exercises and gain confidence in public speaking, as well as present their amazing ideas to potential ‘investors’.

Reverse Pitch Session: Students will also get a chance to judge how well adults present their ideas to them when they get ‘reverse pitched’.

Please note that there is a maximum capacity of 25 students per school. We encourage you to register your interest ASAP (by September 1) to avoid disappointment. All schools will be notified of their attendance status via email by September 10.
