Event description

Description

A membership-only club for young scientists in school years 3 - 6.

Members will learn the art of discovery and scientific enquiry through a series of hands-on science-based workshops and activities.

The Club meets each Thursday from 3.45 – 4.45pm for four weeks during Term 3 in 2017: 27 July, 3 August, 10 August, 17 August.

Calendar:

  • All Wired Up
    Thursday 27 July 2017, 3.45 - 4.45pm

Electronics is a SNAP! We will plan and conduct experiments to solve real-world problems with your project kit. Learn how to recognise and use electrical components to form a circuit that delivers what you want. Easily change the design until you are happy with the result. This is engineering! And a great introduction to MadLab.

  • MadLab
    Thursday 3 August 2017, 3.45 - 4.45pm

You will learn to safely use a soldering iron while assembling an imaginative gadget. Soldering is effectively an electronic ‘glue’ found in almost verything from computers to watches, phones and radios. Learn the code that explains what components go where on the printed circuit board provided - and
    which way around!

  • Dissection Discoveries
    Thursday 10 August 2017, 3.45 - 4.45pm

This engaging dissection workshop will explore the major body parts, how body systems are arranged and will experience just what it is like to work in biological laboratory. Our presenter will guide you through their dissections, pointing out relevant features of the specimen. Please note: high quality specimens sourced from ethical suppliers will be used in this workshop

  • Earth, Sun and Moon
    Thursday 17 August 2017, 3.45 - 4.45pm

How does the earth, moon and sun work in the solar system? How does earth’s tilt affect the seasons? What can craters tell us about the moon’s formation? How do sundials tell the time? What is the difference between a star, planet and moon? All this and more is covered in this hands-on science workshop.
