Event description

Description

South Australia, France and the First World War: uncover our military heritage and contribution to the victory on the western front.

A free public event at which French historian and Flinders University Australian History lecturer, Dr. Romain Fathi, will discuss South Australia's, and in particular Unley’s, involvement in the First World War, its special connection to Pozières, and share stories uncovered during his research.

6.00pm - 6.40pm: Presentation by Dr Fathi

6.40pm - 7.00pm: Questions and answers

7.00pm - 8.00pm: Reception at the Unley museum for informal interactions with the guest speaker and other participants, where you can share your stories and see the Museum's WWI exhibition. Light refreshments will be provided.

This event is part of the Flinders University's South Australians in France project, and is being offered as an adjunct to our search for World War I objects.

Do you own items that were brought home by the men and women who served in France in the Great War of 1914 - 1918? Together with Flinders University, the City of Unley is hunting for WW1 objects that Unley residents may have in storage, that reflect the experiences of Australians who served in France.

We want to better understand the stories associated with these objects and the enduring connections formed with France. We also hope to be able to provide you with information and details about these objects to help you form a better understanding of their significance. World War One trench art, badges, diaries, pictures, coins, cards, calendars, postcards, letters, parts of uniforms and all forms of memorabilia or souvenirs are among the objects we would love to hear about, to remember South Australian service in France.

To get involved, email southaustraliansinfrance@flinders.edu.au with a picture of your objects and the details you have about the items and souvenirs. Bring your artefacts to the Unley Museum on Sunday November 26 to discover their history and have them assessed by French historian, Dr Romain Fathi of Flinders University.
