Description

Since the demise of apartheid in 1994 South Africa has integrated its population but after 23 years the disparity of wealth is worse than ever. The governments of Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma have addressed this issue but little has been achieved. The economy is weakening, unemployment is rising and corruption is rearing its head. What are the prospects of recovery in the short term and will the election in 2019 harbinger a change for the better?

Her Excellency Beryl Sisulu

We are delighted to welcome HE Beryl Sisulu, South Africa’s High Commissioner to Australia to address us this evening. She is the daughter of the late Walter Sisulu who served a 20 year term on Robben Island with the venerable Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu , probably the longest suffering woman freedom fighter against apartheid. Beryl is a seasoned diplomat having served her country as Ambassador in Norway, Japan and now in Australia. A lawyer by profession and an articulate speaker on conditions in her home country.

South Africa has probably the highest standard of living in Africa, is endowed with enormous mineral wealth and a highly industrialised country. The years of apartheid have detracted from its success and consequently South African expatriates are spread across the world being amongst the best migrants ever.

Despite the success of the ANC governments under Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, South Africa now finds itself in the doldrums under Jacob Zuma. But the country is bigger than one man and the future does look good if the climate of good governance and sound economic planning is put in place. And it is upon this theme that our knowledgeable speaker will address us.
