Event description

Description

FREE song writing workshop with popular local musician and songwriter Mary Myfanway and author Sarah Evans, who will share their love of storytelling in an Escape to Everywhere themed song writing workshop. Come along and we’ll write a song together and then sing it!

For this song writing workshop Mary & Sarah will be selecting the topic of ‘Escape to Everywhere’, developing a melody, a chorus, some verses and a purpose for the song.

1. A Topic - Mary will ask questions to inspire ideas and capture on the white board;

What are your kids' interests? Dinosaurs, dolls, colouring… What time of year is it? Halloween, spring break, Christmas...What are they learning about in school or preschool? Outer space, colours, parts of the body, photo day… The inspiration for making up songs with kids is all around.

2. A Melody

When writing with young children and because of the time allowed, Mary will use melodies of songs she already has. The melody will be used as a guide and replace the lyrics to suit our topic of ‘Escape to Everywhere’.

3. A Chorus

This is the heart of the song. The other very important and fun part is the rhyming scheme. Writing songs is a great way for children to learn rhymes and this is where they can really contribute to the song ‘Escape to Everywhere’ by writing down their ideas as individuals or small groups, depending on the numbers in attendance.

4. Some Verses

The verses will elaborate on the topic Escape to Everywhere’ or start to tell the story. The ideas from the children will form as many of these as we need, making sure we’re sticking to our melody and maintaining a rhyming scheme. The more verses we come up with, the more the children will get the idea and run with it.

The process of writing a song is fun and worthwhile, and it's now so easy to record children singing their compositions. We’ll either use the app Garage Band or a home video with Healthway Go for 2&5 message in the imagery with promotional materials.

We're hoping that children can walk here straight from school, have a snack and then start the workshop. There is parking outside the library on Mount and Rose Streets, plus the carpark at the rear of the Manjimup Hotel.
