Getting Published with Mary Cunnane

Everything you always wanted to know about publishing but were too afraid to ask. An in-depth exploration of how publishing works in Australia and internationally, with an emphasis on how this information can help you develop your book project to maximum effect. Topics covered include what agents do; the role of acquisitions editors; contracts; royalties and advances; foreign rights; publicity and marketing; and the nuts and bolts of an effective book proposal/submission. The afternoon session features a mock editorial/acquisitions meeting.

About Mary Cunnane

Mary Cunnane has worked in the publishing industry for more than 30 years, both in the US and Australia. As a vice president and senior editor at WW Norton & Company in New York, she was a member of the editorial board and responsible for acquiring, editing, and publishing some 20 books a year across a broad range of subjects ‒ including science and medicine; history and politics; social science; feminist issues; popular culture and current events; and biography, fiction and poetry.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Unless otherwise stated, QWC workshops and events are suitable for participants aged 16 years and over. If you are under 18 years of age, please check with us for suitability before purchasing a ticket.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

What can I bring into the event?

You can bring either pen and paper or a laptop along with you to write with. If you do bring a laptop, please remember to bring a power adaptor if necessary.

What's the refund policy?

If Queensland Writers Centre cancels an event, we will try to reschedule it for a later date. If we cannot reschedule the event, or if you are unable to attend on the amended date, your payment will be refunded in full.
