Seraphina Martin studied printmaking at the National Art School in Paris before moving to Sydney 40 years ago to teach printmaking at the Sydney University Art Workshop. She was the recipient of the Moya Dyring Studio residency at the Cite des Arts in Paris in 1988. There, she studied at the Atelier 17 under William Hayter. Since 1994 she has developed non toxic technology called Solar Plate etching. In 2005 she attended an artist in residence at the Canberra school of Art, Canberra.
She has taught printmaking at Meadowbank, Hornsby, and Penrith Tafe. She regularly teaches at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery, Gymea and Megalo print Studio, Canberra. Seraphina now teaches at Willoughby Art Centre.
Most recently she travelled to India for a residency at the Government School of Art in Calcutta where she taught etching as well as Kola Bhavan University in Shantineketan, West Bengal. Seraphina has had many solo and group exhibitions of her work in Australia and overseas. Her work is represented in public and private collections in Australia.
This workshop is suitable for all levels.
Materials supplied:
2 Solar plates provided for the workshop: 1 x A6 size (14 x 21cm) and 1 x A5 size( 21cmx15cm) solar plates. 3 full sheets of printing paper – this will yield 12-15 prints.
You to supply:
Bring at least 4 images to work with. These can be a photo, collage or your paintings. They need to be photocopied onto clear transparencies which can be done at Officeworks for 80c. Home printer must be laser only onto transparency film. Inkjet printers don’t dry on transparencies. Bring images already photocopied in BLACK ONLY. Use Photo text settings on the photocopier found in IMAGE QUALITY setting. This creates a random dot, which assists in developing blacks areas. Images can be reduced on photocopier to A6 and A5 size to fit solar plates.
If this is not available to you, there will be film provided for drawing with pencil. Natural leaves and organic matter as well as an assortment of images on film will be supplied to cut up create a collage. Bring tools such as scribes, scissors, scalpel knife, pens, pencil, cotton buds and masking tape (optional).
A Folder (A3) size with tissue paper to take home damp prints.
Protective clothing, apron/dustcoat/old shirt and closed shoes are required. A small box of disposable rubber gloves & hand sanitiser from the supermarket. Bring lunch and a drink.
It is essential if you are unwell on the day of the workshop that you do not attend under any circumstances.
