TUSCULUM TALK

What is socially responsible architecture? How is it achieved? Is it compatible with commercial practice and how can architects get involved? Find answers and inspiration at our first Tusculum Talk for 2019, featuring presentations and panel discussion with multi award winning architects David Kaunitz (Kaunitz Yeung Architecture), Anthony Nolan (Kennedy Associates) and Esther Charlesworth, Founding Director of Architects without Frontiers (Australia).

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Architects, architectural students, designers, project managers, engineers, architectural technologists, planners, community and humaitarian workers, and anyone with a personal or professional interest in social responsibility

SPEAKERS

Dr Esther Charlesworth is a Professor in the School of Architecture and Urban Design at RMIT University and is the Director of the Humanitarian Architecture Research Lab (HARB). She is the founding Director of Architects Without Frontiers and the Academic Director of the Master of Disaster, Design and Development degree (MoDDD) at RMIT. Since 1990, she has worked in the public and private sectors of architecture and urban design in Melbourne, Sydney, New York, and Boston, and has published seven books on the theme of social justice and architecture, including: Divided Cities (2009), Humanitarian Architecture (2014), and Sustainable Housing Reconstruction (2015).

David Kaunitz is an Australian architect who is also registered in the UK. Following graduation, David worked in the UK for seven years, where he ran the London office of a large practice and was a senior architect on the London Olympic Village. Subsequently, David lived in the Solomon Islands leading community development and post disaster responses for various governments, agencies and NGOs across the Pacific and South East Asia.

In starting Kaunitz Yeung Architecture he has combined his extensive commercial experience with his knowledge of living in and working with communities. This results in architecture that places people at its centre and where good architecture does not need to necessarily be a luxury item.

Anthony Nolan has over 20 years of experience in delivering projects with a strong focus on accessible, social and affordable housing solutions for a range of government, not for profit and private developer clients. Anthony is currently looking into innovative housing solutions, including the use of pre-fabricated modular construction as a possible contribution to addressing affordability.
