Event description

Description

This is the second in a series of monthly methods workshops run by researchers in QUT's Digital Media Research Centre. In this workshop—the first of two focusing on social media analytics—the DMRC's Prof. Axel Bruns introduces methods for accessing and analysing Twitter data.

Workshop overview: Particularly when working with large social media datasets, quantitative and mixed-methods approaches that draw especially on visual representations of ‘big data’ are now an indispensable part of the scholarly research and publication process. This data analytics and visualisation module focuses on a number of emerging standard tools and methods for large-scale data analytics, using Twitter data to illustrate these approaches. The module introduces participants to the open-source Twitter Capture and Analysis Toolkit (TCAT) as a capable and reliable tool for data gathering from the Twitter API, and to the high-end data analytics software Tableau as a powerful means of processing and visualising large datasets. The skills gained in the module are also transferrable to working with other large datasets from social media and other sources.

Workshop facilitator: Prof. Axel Bruns, DMRC

Participation in the workshop is free but strictly limited, and registration is essential.

Further information and what to prepare:

In this workshop Prof. Bruns will introduce the new setup for the DMRC's TrISMA Australian Twitter Collection. You will be able to gain some hands-on experience working with live Twitter data from the Australian Twittersphere, and explore how this might be relevant for your own research.

For the purposes of the workshop, you will be provided with temporary access to the live TrISMA data, even if you have not yet been accredited for TrISMA use in your own research.

To participate, you will need to bring a laptop with a current copy of Tableau installed. Tableau is a commercial software available for free to current students and under educational licences to researchers. If you haven’t installed Tableau yet, request a free academic licence for Tableau Desktop here, or download the free 14-day trial version.

TrISMA is part of the QUT Digital Observatory, a facility hosted by the QUT Institute for Future Environments and developed by the DMRC.
