Editing workshop with Susan Midalia

Saturday 11 August 2018, 1.00-4.00pm

$35 KSP and WAWU members, $50 others

This workshop as part of our 'So You Want To...' series is brought to you by the KSP Writers' Centre with support from the Shire of Mundaring as part of the 2018 National Year of Lifelong Learning. Tea and coffee provided.

So You Want To ... Polish to Perfection

The writer Ernest Hemingway famously advised aspiring writers to “write drunk, edit sober.” While his metaphor of drunkenness rightly celebrates the spontaneity and joyfulness of creative writing, it also acknowledges the need to think soberly and rationally about our creative choices, in order to make the final draft the best it can be. This three-hour workshop on the proof reading and editing processes will equip you with strategies to make your competent or even wonderful writing even better. Using direct instruction, short writing exercises and models from memorable writing, the workshop will consider both methods of drafting and ways to avoid a range of stylistic weaknesses, including inadvertent repetition, clichés, mixed metaphors, clumsy dialogue and purple prose. We will also work on “bigger picture” issues such as credibility, continuity and pacing. In the process, we will consider how to engage readers by creating arresting beginnings, interesting structures and different kinds of voices, be they amusing, disturbing, confronting or melancholy. Please bring your preferred writing implements, a love of story and language, and a sense of openness to constructive criticism in a supportive group environment. You’re also welcome to bring a piece of your own writing to work on. Finally, since we rarely learn anything valuable unless the learning is pleasurable, having fun is mandatory.
