So You Think You Can Count?

Students will grapple with counting problems. We will extend on common problems such as “How many squares are on a chessboard?” and look at different ways to count a large number of objects. We will explore ideas such as binomial coefficients, partitioning techniques, and algorithmic thinking. The focus will be on improving students’ systematic reasoning.

Schedule: 1 x 1.5 hr sessions

Suitable for: High-achieving students in Years 3 - 4

Prerequisites: No prerequisite skills are required

Required equipment:

• A device with access to the internet and Zoom.
• An exercise book for working out

Note to teachers: This program is in high demand. So that we can allow as many students as possible to participate, we ask that if you wish to book more than 10 students, you purchase a group ticket and have students participate via a single Zoom, streamed into the classroom, rather than have students logging on through individual devices.
