Event description

Description

Join snorkel leaders from Experiencing Marine Sanctuary (EMS), Force of Nature, and It Came from the Harbour project for an incredible guided snorkel through the magical world of the Port River Mangrove Forest within the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary.

The Port River has long been an aquatic playground for sailors, kayakers and fishers... but have you ever looked below the surface, or wondered what lives there? Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries in partnership with "It Came from the Harbour" (a Port Adelaide Artists Forum project) is offering you a chance to explore and find out! Join us for a guided snorkel to discover the hermit crabs, blue swimmer crabs, anemones, black bream, gobies, razor fish, colourful sponges and ascidians that call the Port River home. Lucky snorkelers may also be treated to the sight of a ray rising from the bottom, or a blast of air from a passing dolphin. The water in the estuary is much warmer than the adjacent gulf: participants can expect near tropical water temperature of 27 degrees even in March.

It Came from the Harbour project is funded by ArtsSA, and led by photographers, citizen scientists and artists from Force of Nature and SpinFX AustrAliA.

Thank you Tania Cann for Garden Island Dolphin image.

FAQs

Where do I meet to take part in tour?

EMS Snorkel leaders will have a registration table set up near boat ramp and toilets - look for the EMS trailer and marquee.

Is there an age limit to enter the event?

The event is open to children 5 years and above who can swim. 5-7 year olds need to have their own floatation device and supervision is one-on-one in water by a parent/adult carer.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

Bring your own wetsuit and snorkeling gear if yopu have them (if you dont have your own wetsuit or snorkeling equipment we can provide free of charge).

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

That is fine.

Do you need to have snorkeling experience?

You dont need snorkeling experience but you do need to be a good swimmer. Larger groups will be broken down to smaller groups with similair experienced snorkellers in each group - this allows more assistance to those who require it.
