SMART Spelling 1 Day Course Geelong
Thu. 13 October 2016, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm AEDT
The SMART Spelling Approach provides a sensible and systematic way to teach spelling. It makes teachers’ lives easier! It allows for the teaching of word families, personal, common and topic words. It has a clearly written Prep - 6 scope and sequence that is well established in many schools.
This approach includes the explicit instruction of syllables, sounds, letters and morphemes (prefixes and suffixes). It is an approach to teaching, rather than a set of boring workbooks.
In the one-day course, Michelle explains this approach, and examines the 4 area of spelling knowledge in detail, making relevant links into what they mean for classroom teaching. We explore the phono-graphic structure of the English language, the 44 different sounds and their most common letter patterns. Participants are shown practical ways by which to teach their students how to break words into syllables and sounds.
The most effective four spelling rules and plural rules are presented. Teachers participate in a range of spelling activities suitable for students in years 1 to 6.
Most importantly, participants will be shown how to easily differentiate spelling words to suit their students’ needs. Participants will also receive a free copy of the SMART Spelling manual (valued at $88) so that they will be able to implement this approach in their classroom immediately.
