SmART (Sustainably Made Art from Recycled Trash)

This November in conjuntion with National Recycling Week, The City of Ballarat invites community members to participate in the SmArt contest.

ReThink your waste!
Start seeing waste as a useful product not rubbish.

Important Dates:

  • October 6th Registrations open.
  • November 3rd at 5pm Registrations close.
  • November 7th & 8th Between 4pm to 5pm Art pieces to be submitted at the Ballarat Show Grounds Woolworths pavilion.
  • November 10th, 11th & 12th Pieces will be displayed at the Ballarat Show in the Family Woolworths Pavilion between 9.30am and 4pm.
  • November 12th & 13th Between 4pm to 5pm pieces to be collected by the owners (unless notified otherwise).
  • *Please note this does not gain entry into the Ballarat Show. Entry will need to be paid on the 10th, 11th & 12th of November.
  • November 17th The winners will be announced and awarded, their piece will be on display for the day at the Trades Hall, Camp St Ballarat.
  • November 17th, 18th & 19th Awarded art pieces will be on display at the Trades Hall, Camp Street. Alongside recycling and rethink workshops and displays by Junkies Magazine and Grampians Central West Waste & Resource Recovery Group.

Categories and prizes

  • SmArt Open: – Open to artists, designers and members of the community who are 18years and over.
    First Prize: $600 Second Prize: $350
  • SmArt Youth: – Ages 13 to 17.
    First Prize: $300 Second Prize: $150
  • SmArt young: – Ages 8 to 12.
    First Prize: $200 Second Prize: $100

Artwork Entry Criteria:

  • All artworks to be constructed from used or recycled materials.
  • Original products can only be used for assembling the work, for binding, bonding and adhering painting.
  • The art or design object must be no more than 150cm in width or depth (including the frame).
  • Three-dimensional works can be free standing or wall mounted, if wall mounted it must not exceed 5kg in weight.
  • Selection into the exhibition will be based on innovative use of waste materials or the upcycling of waste materials into the art or design object (creating a better-quality object or one of higher environmental value).
  • Entrants must live, work, or study in the City of Ballarat.
  • All finalists will be on display on the 19th of November. Artists can put a price on their displayed pieces.
  • All entries are due by 4pm on the 1st of November 2017.

Selecting and Judging:

Selecting of artwork and design objects will be by 3 pre-selected judges. This is subject to change without notification.
