Event description

Description

Slow stitching is the art of hand sewing with mindfulness. Many handicrafts have now succumbed to our modern era ethos of being fast and efficient. Slow Stitching promotes the exact opposite. Taking time to connect with the fabrics and yarns whilst embracing the processes rather than outcomes revitalises creativity and offers therapeutic relaxation. In a society overwhelmed by 'screen time', who doesn't need more of this?

Suzanne is an experienced textile teacher with a passion for Japanese textiles and crafts. She has travelled frequently to Japan to add to her collection and learn techniques such as Sashiko & Boromono from local specialists.

In this 3 hour class, Suzanne combines the ancient art of Boromono with Chikuchiku. In Boromono, scraps of old fabric are repurposed in patchwork. The imperfections and random combinations are celebrated, an appreciation of beauty known as 'wabi sabi'.

Chikuchiku (the sound of the needle going through fabric) is a modern, more playful form of Sashiko stitching, where neat & even stitching is prized.

Suzanne will guide you through both techniques to create a delightful small purse.

If the ticket remains up for grabs we would appreciate you letting us know promptly so that we can offer a space to another guest.

This workshop is suitable only for adults. If you have children that would love this workshop, please pop an email to Joh at Kutumba (organiser details below) as we may be able to organise a workshop for young stitchers!

We do not encourage bringing food into our gatherings. Casa Dolci and Sarah's Sisters Cafe are just a few doors down from Kutumba wo why not check them out for a bite to eat before the workshop? There are also many other eateries along Semaphore Road. Takeaway coffees are fine to bring in with you and we recommend Casa Dolci Cafe (2 doors down from us) for superb coffee.

Due to the nature of our venue and this class, children may not accompany for theparticipants for the duration of the workshop.
