Description

Slow and yet slower fashion from West India

LOkesh Ghai, artist and designer based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India will give a presentation on his research into traditional garment construction in the Kutch region of Gujarat in western India, a true example of slow fashion.

India has a long tradition of tailoring seamed garments and historical information is rich. However, traditional methods of apparel construction have been marginalized, with information on the making of traditional garments scant with few accounts from the artisan tailor’s perspective. Ghai’s research focusses on the making of a kediyun, an upper body male garment worn in north-west India and includes the history of the garment, its socio-cultural importance and agency within regional life. His research offers new ways of thinking and approaching garment construction from measuring to embodied movement.

LOkesh Ghai is a textile artist, researcher and academic working with traditional craft practice. Since 2011 has been involved in numerous projects in the UK and India including Frozen Charlotte, V&A Museum of Childhood, London and Harley Gallery, Nottinghamshire in 2011; the Cotton-Exchange, Gallery of Costume, Manchester and Harris Museum, Preston in 2012; ‘India Street’ exhibition at the 2014 Edinburgh International Art Festival and at the Tramway Gallery, Glasgow and the Conflictorium Museum, Ahmedabad in 2016-17. LOkesh been visiting lecturer at numerous institutions in India and the UK including the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Gandhinagar; Royal College of Art, London; and Somaiya Kala Vidya, Kutch, India’s premier design institute for traditional craft communities. He has also worked with the Warli tribes of India as part of Re: Imagine India celebrating the 70th year of Indian independence in 2017.
