Description

Speaker: Lucy Frost SKILLED FOR LIFE? INDENTURED CHILDREN FROM THE QUEEN’S ASYLUM, 1860-1880

More than 900 children were indentured as “orphan school apprentices” in the final two decades of an institution which still carried the stigma of the colony’s grim convict past.

How did the orphanage prepare these children for their apprenticeships? And what sorts of skills might they have acquired during the years of their indentures?

No need to book.

This talk forms part of the Professional Historians of Australia (Tasmania) and the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office program of public lectures held in the Allport Library, Ground Floor, 91 Murray Street, Hobart.
