Event description

Description

We water ski 456kms over three days between Murray Bridge and Renmark in South Australia to raise awareness and funds to promote and take action towards mental health, wellbeing and suicide prevention.

We'd love for you to join us!

THE CAUSE:

Ski For Life exists with purpose and passion for social change when it comes to mental health, wellness and suicide prevention. We're a group of people committed to raising awareness and promoting these issues by hosting the annual Ski For Life water ski relay over the March long weekend in South Australia.

Our waterskiing teams share compassion and empathy for those impacted by suicide, mental health and overall wellbeing struggles, with most having a story of their own to tell. Along with waterskiing between Murray Bridge and Renmark in three days, our teams and our committee raises funds in order to facilitate a grant process to fund and support community initiatives and programs that raise awareness, provide support and have a focus on mental health, wellbeing and suicide prevention. Our Ski For Life grants program is open all year round with applications encouraged for programs and projects which align with our mission. Visit www.skiforlife.com.au for more information.

Thinking big 7 years ago, the initial small group developed the concept of a 500km water ski relay. The Murray River was duly chosen as it is the life blood of SA, along the shores of which many rural communities do it tough, especially when in comes to suicide and mental health issues with evidence indicating that these issues are above average in these communities. With 2 boats and a close knit group of friends, Ski For Life was born. Years on, 2018 saw 20 boats and over 200 people involved with over $60,000 raised to be put back into communities across Australia that need it.

2019 is again shaping up to be bigger and better than any of the years before. It is estimated that we will have 35 boats and over 350 people in attendance. Will you and your nearest and dearest be some of them? We certainly hope so!

THE EVENT:
Teams meet in Murray Bridge on the evening of Thursday 7th March for dinner and a briefing as well as boat safety inspections and an all round good night of meeting the fellow Ski For Life participants.

Day One - Friday 8th March 2019
Kicking off at Sturt Reserve, Murray Bridge, our teams will assemble for breakfast and the official opening of the event. With members of the local community invited, they kindly wave off the teams as they take off upstream with stops at Mannum and Swan Reach finishing at Blanchetown for the night.

Day Two - Saturday 8th March 2019
Saturday morning we depart Blanchetown early bound for Cadell. Cadell is a very special place on the Ski For Life route and it is where we take part in an amazing community organised ceremony remembering those we have lost to suicide. From there we head to Caudo Winery for the worlds best sangria, on to Waikerie and finishing up at Cobdogla.

Saturday evening is a fantastic opportunity to really have some fun at the offical team dinner held at the Cobdogla Club. Here is where we can find out more about each team and share skiing stories collected over the past two days whilst indulging in a great buffet dinner.

Day Three - Sunday 9th March 2019
Sunday we head to Loxton, Martin’s Bend (near Berri) and finish with a grand finale at Renmark. This is another great opportunity for the public to come along and support the completion of the Ski For Life event at the Renmark Club. Here we will be hosting the offical Ski For Life closing celebrations that include afternoon refreshments, live entertainment, formal presentations and a fundraising auction. It is always a great afternoon at the Renmark Club!

From here, teams will make their way out to our final destination, Paringa Resort, where we can sit back and enjoy the accomplishment of participating in Ski For Life alongside new found friends over dinner.

FAQs:
1. How many people are needed to form a team?
We recommend all teams to have between 8 and 10 people. Any less stretches teams a little too thin but we definitely live by the motto 'the more the merrier' so more than 10 people are very much welcomed.

2. Can I register as an individual and be allocated a team?
Yes! When registering, simply indicate that you are not registering as a part of a team and a member of the Ski For Life team will be in touch to discuss what team you could be a part of.

3. What roles are played within a team?
There are many roles to be filled to form a great Ski For Life Team. Based on our recommended team size of 8 to 10 people, we encourage you to have team members who have the skills which will allow everyone to have a go at all/most of these roles:

  • Skiers (you can tow upto three skiers at a time)
  • Observer
  • Navigator
  • Boat driver
  • Car and trailer driver(s) (we call these angels our road crew)

4. What IS included in my registration?

  • Meals (Thursday dinner, Friday breakfast, morning tea, lunch and dinner, Saturday morning tea, lunch and dinner, morning tea, lunch and dinner, Monday breakfast)
  • Event insurance
  • Non-powered camp sites for our nightly accommodation (powered sites or cabins available at additional costs payable by each individual)

5. What IS NOT included in my registration?

  • Drinks (water, alcohol, juice, soft drink etc.)
  • Additional food (snacks)
  • Camping gear
  • Travel expenses to and from Murray Bridge/Renmark e.g. boat fuel and car fuel.
  • Ski For Life merchandise (these are available when registering for tickets or at the event)
  • Ski For Life team flag (available for purchase when registering for tickets. This is highly encouraged as a purchase as every team typically has one)

6. How do we get our car(s) and trailer(s) from start to finish?
Each team should have enough people to form a road crew. Our road crews drive from stop to stop along the river and transport the teams cars and trailers along with any additional snacks, drinks, personal belongings and camp gear. We suggest the road crew swaps around to ensure they also experience time out on the water however many teams have a designated boat crew and a designated road crew. How you manage your teams roles is entirely up to you.

7. Do we have to fundraise?
While it is not compulsory for teams to fundraise on behalf of Ski For Life, it is encouraged that each team aim to raise a minimum of $2000 to support and fund future grants that will be given out by Ski For Life to community projects, events and initiatives that have a mental health, wellbeing and suicide prevention focus.

8. How do we fundraise?
We recommend using Chuffed.Org and listing your team as a fundraiser under the Ski For Life campaign. Once registered, Amy who is a member of the Ski For Life team will be in touch to assist you with setting up your fundraising portal and getting you and your team on your way to fundraising success.
