Australia's longest running Skepticamp is back! To be held at Sydney's UTS Campus, Skepticamp is the unconference for lovers of science, reason & all things skeptical.
What's an unconference, you say?
Skepticamp is a conference for the delegates by the delegates. Everyone is encouraged to bring a topic to speak on, everyone is encouraged to bring questions, and everyone can help out on the day.
In the words of Skepticamp.org: "Diverging from the traditional lecture events which have dominated skepticism for decades, these ‘open events’ tear down the barriers to organizing substantive (and fun) events by building on the wildly-successful Barcamp conference model from the tech community."
How Do I Participate?
The day is broken up into 15 minute slots. If you'd like to give a talk, get to Skepticamp in the morning and register. Most talks are around 10 minutes long, with five minutes for questions. You can use a different format if you like – a group discussion, panel or any kind of presentation that can be completed in 15 minutes.
Powerpoint slides can be accommodated - please bring a USB stick with your presentation and/or a laptop. For esoteric A/V or staging requests, get in touch via Twitter or Facebook. Please feel free to advertise your topic in advance at the Skepticamp Wiki.
In the last hour of the day everybody will come together for prizes and flash talks...
What Are Flash Talks?
Flash Talks are short talks given during the last session of the day. Each flash talk is only 3 minutes long and must be given without slides or video. Anyone can stand up and have a go at a flash talk - you don't need to register in advance.
Flash talks can be great for anyone that wants to participate but doesn't feel like they can fill a full slot, or anybody inspired by the day that wants to have their say!
CupCakeCamp will be held again as a side event during SkeptiCamp Sydney!
What Is CupCakeCamp?
CupCakeCamp is a delicious, collaborative event that will be happening during Skepticamp. Like Skepticamp, it's free to join in and everyone is encouraged to contribute.
How Do I Participate?
Get baking! This is your chance to show off your culinary skills. Bring a batch of your best cupcakes along, and ask an unOrganiser to point you in the right direction for the judging and tasting table.
If possible, bring a sign so that your fellow cupcake connoisseurs know what they're eating - What flavour are your cakes? Do they contain nuts? Are they gluten or animal product-free?
At a designated time during the day, Skepticamp attendees will be given the opportunity to taste-test the cupcakes and vote for their favourite. There will be prizes and bragging rights for the winners of Skepticamp Sydney's CupCakeCamp!
Skepticamp Sydney 2015 will be held at the University of Technology, Sydney, on Broadway. The event is easily reached by public transport, and is well served in terms of facilities.
More info can be found at http://skepticampaustralia.org (keep your eyes peeled because the info here will evolve as the day approaches!)
Finally, we're looking for sponsors to help out with Lunch and Post-unConference Drinks, at a venue TBD. We'd also love to give out prizes for the best presentations on the day. If you would like to sponsor the event, please get in touch via email at Sydney@skepticampaustralia.org
