Event Details

Empowering Young Women Through Education is an event designed to inspire, inform and energise young women to see how the education opportunities they have today will shape the lives they have in the future. The event is aimed at female students in in Years 9-11 who are at risk of not completing school and could benefit from listening to the inspiring speakers at this special event. Our hope is that our speakers may inspire vulnerable students to see the opportunities that finishing school can open up.

A sit down breakfast will be provided and then all attendees will be invited to to listen and interact with Annabelle Chauncy OAM and Naty Guerrro-Diaz our Keynote Speakers for the event around how education provides the springboard for their personal and professional success.

The event will provide a great chance to meet and network with other girls from schools across Melbourne; we hope that they will make new friends and leave motivated and excited about the future ahead and have enjoyed the planned activities.

Organiser

Soroptimist International - Melba

We are an international movement, one of the world’s largest women only service clubs (think Rotary for chicks!) and we are dedicated to making life better for women and girls – through direct service, funding projects and advocating for structural change.

Soroptimist is Latin, sorore is sister (like sorority) and optima means the best – so we’re the best of sisters – looking out for each other. We are internationally recognised and have a seat at the United Nations, where we report on our global projects in the areas of gender equality, sustainable development, financing for development, trafficking, migration, education, ageing, and peace and security.

We operate as chapters or clubs and the club organising this event is called SI Melba (named after the singing Dame). We meet at 7am on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at NAB Village, Docklands. Our club is 6 years old and in that time we have been active in a range of local and international projects including:

• providing bicycles for volunteer malaria aid workers working in mountainous and remote areas of Cambodia.
• working with Australian based Afghan women to establish a micro enterprise (sewing and literacy program) for Aghani women.
• sponsoring a young Australian indigenous girl through the Smith Family to ensure she has text books and can go on school excursions etc.
• the annual Empowering Young Women Through Education event for Melbourne school girls.

If you want to join in then send Susannah an email at simelba@siswp.org.
