Shared Decision-Making Intensive Workshop
Event Information
About this event
Shared-decision making is a consultation process that requires the collaboration between health professionals and patients to reach the most appropriate healthcare decisions. For clinicians, this requires complex skills to invite the patient to decision making process, present treatment options and discuss the evidence that balances risks, harms and expected outcomes alongside the patients values and preferences.
For patients who are affected by serious illness or disease there are various timepoints along the disease trajectory where shared decision making may be key to the consultation, therefore requiring additional skills development.
Workshop Learning Objectives
During this workshop participants will:
- Gain awareness of the underpinning evidence, skills and frameworks for shared decision making
- Identify key timepoints along the disease trajectory where shared-decision making may apply
- Review the strategies to invite the patient to participate in decision making and elicit goals and concerns as part of the decision-making process
- Apply frameworks to communicate risk (e.g. best case/worse case) and integrate a recommendation based on values and goals
- Develop skills to aid recall, check understanding and close a consultation.
- Apply new skills by engaging in experiential group learning activities with a simulated patient.
