Join us to hear from international guest speaker Shalmali Guttal as we open discussion and join the dots.
Shalmali Guttal is the Executive Director of Focus on the Global South. Along with the likes of Naomi Klein and Noam Chomsky, she is one of the strongest voices against the frenzy of land & resource grabbing that’s creating landlessness & destitution across the global south – with a focus on the rights of Indigenous peoples and women.
She has witnessed first-hand neoliberalism run rampant: the destruction caused by privatisation in virtually every sector – from transportation, health, energy and urban development, to agriculture, water & finance.
Here, too, we are seeing this ‘accumulation by dispossession’. The closure of Aboriginal homelands; forcing of CSG onto rural communities; removal of elected representatives; defunding and privatisation of our basic services and education; imposition of the TPP; criminalisation of protest, and steamrolling of Westconnex are all part of the same story. Here – just as Shalmali has witnessed in India, the US and Southeast Asia – the methods are predatory, undemocratic, discriminatory and destructive.
By exchanging stories across borders, we can build our ability to articulate the problems we witness, and continue the discussion in our own lives.
Proceeds from ticket and bar sales will be contributed to Focus on the Global South.
