Description

Innovation precincts are a key priority for all tiers of government due to their role in driving economic and urban development. Given their positioning as focal points for jobs, services, investment and innovation, their importance is expected to increase as our cities continue to grow. However, experience to date shows that even when we plan to co-locate education, health and/or research institutions, the synergies between these institutions, related private enterprise and the workers that they collectively accommodate, aren’t easily realised. The ingredients for success include infrastructure, programmatic and behavioural interventions, and carefully designed governance arrangements.

This SGS Seminar Series will explore innovation precincts by:

  • Profiling their current and future economic significance in Sydney and Melbourne
  • Identifying their key success factors by drawing on best practice case studies
  • Examining their interface with the evolving national innovation agenda and its policy framework, and
  • Discussing their absolute need for effective governance arrangements.

Join the SGS team and our guest panel to discuss this topic further at our Melbourne seminar. Guest speakers include Laura Schmahmann, David Lawrence and Andrew McDougall.

Laura Schmahmann is a Senior Consultant at SGS Economics and Planning. Laura manages a range of strategic urban planning and economic development projects with a particular focus on knowledge and creative industries. Her postgraduate research focused on the drivers of knowledge spillovers in innovation precincts in Sydney. More recently, she has been involved in preparing strategies for innovation precincts across Australia and has a well-developed understanding of the keys to success.

David Lawrence is the General Manager, Growth Centres Policy Branch at the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Innovation and Science. David has policy responsibility for the Industry Growth Centres Initiative which is an industry led approach driving innovation, productivity and competitiveness by concentrating Government investment on key industry sectors. His team is also leading the work on University Precincts/Innovation Districts and Industry 4.0.

Andrew McDougall is a Principal and Partner at SGS Economics and Planning. Andrew develops economic development strategies; business cases and financial/ economic appraisals for projects; and helps clients prioritise infrastructure demands. Andrew has also been involved in the design, development and delivery of innovation precincts across multiple Australian jurisdictions, understanding the economic and urban development benefits these precincts can generate when true collaboration can be fostered.
