Navigating Sexuality, Ageing, and Dementia: Understanding Intimacy in Later Life

Speaker Bio:

A/Prof Cindy Jones serves as the Co-Head of the Bachelor of Medical Studies within the Bond Medical Program. She is also the Chair of the Collaborative for Research in Understanding Stigma in Healthcare (CRUSH)—an interdisciplinary research group dedicated to reducing stigma and discrimination in healthcare and aged care settings. A/Prof Jones has been recognised among the world’s top 2% of scientists by Elsevier and Stanford University each year from 2020 to 2023 (latest data).

Nationally, A/Prof Jones is regarded as one of Australia’s leading researchers in ageing and long-term care, with her work primarily focusing on the social and behavioural dimensions of ageing—particularly the alleviation of behavioural and psychological symptoms in people living with dementia. She led the development of the Intimacy and Sexuality Expression Preference (ISEP) Tool, funded by the Dementia Australia Research Foundation, supported by an online hub featuring user guides, case studies, and implementation resources. In addition, she developed Sexualities & Dementia: An Online Education Resource for Health Professionals, which addresses a highly stigmatised and underrepresented aspect of dementia care.

A/Prof Jones is widely recognised as Australia’s leading educator in the area of sexuality and dementia, with her work receiving national media attention and contributing to policy development and sector-wide education.
