Description

Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim

Director - James Cutler
Music Director Rainer Pollard

Performed by the Graduating Music Theatre Company, Fed Uni Arts Academy
As part of the SERIOUS COURAGE season at the Arts Academy.

Sweeney Todd is a masterpiece of suspense, obsession, revenge, madness and meat pies. Heralded as one of Stephen Sondheim's greatest scores, Sweeney Todd is indisputably a masterpiece of modern musical theatre.

Created by the Tony Award-winning team of Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and Hugh Wheeler (book), and based on an adaptation by Christopher Bond, Sweeney Todd won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Benjamin Barker, aka Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, returns to London after 15 years in exile and plans to take revenge on the corrupt judge who banished him. When baker Mrs Lovett is in desperate need of fresh meat for her pies, the two implement a cunningly murderous solution to both of their problems. The horror musical blurs the lines between fact and fiction, good and evil, madness and sanity, the consumer and the consumed, bringing with it a shocking, almost Orwellian dystopian reality, and a delicious serving of modern musical theatre best served piping hot.

This season is performed in conjunction with the launch of the Romancing the Skull exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat. On Friday October 13, the Arts Academy presents a special midnight performance of Sweeney Todd for those seeking extra mystery and intrigue.

This production brings together the future stars of Australian music theatre, our graduating Music Theatre Company, under the invigorating direction of James Cutler and music direction of Rainer Pollard.

Sweeney Todd is part of the Arts Academy Serious Courage program, a season of political performance that is both a call to arms and a celebration of amazing performance from the Graduating Arts Academy Acting and Music Theatre Companies. Contemporary, passionate, radical, and epic: a celebration of Caryl Churchill, Stephen Sondheim and Bertolt Brecht.
