Description

Senior Certificates and Pathways: Are we giving young people the right options?

ECU is proud to host national upper secondary education and transitions expert, Professor John Polesel.

In his lecture, Professor Polesel will review how historically, senior certificates have been required to perform a range of functions in Australian schools. These include meeting the personal and social needs of young people, addressing the civic and citizenship needs of society, supplying the skills and competencies required by employers, and meeting the selection needs of universities. The quality of the pathways from Year 12 is contested and varies by student background, but comprehensive transitions data are only available from the three large eastern states. This presentation considers the existing research on school completion, pathways from school, curricular options and processes of university selection. It finishes by suggesting some options for systems to consider going forward.

About Professor John Polesel:
Professor Polesel is Acting Deputy Dean and Director of the Centre for Vocational and Educational Policy in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne.

He is currently leading a review of Vocational Education and Training for Secondary Students for the NSW government, and has published in leading education journals, including the British Journal of Sociology of Education, the Oxford Review of Education and the Journal of Education Policy.
