Description

Seminar – Local Colour: experiments in nature

3pm to 5pm Friday 27 July 2018

Location: UNSW Galleries, Free

‘Local Colour’ presents the work of artists and designers interested in sustainable practices, local ecologies and the world’s natural resources. This seminar includes a curatorial overview by exhibition curator Liz Williamson and illustrated talks by exhibiting artist Julie Ryder and Dr Julie Montgarrett on the work of the late Elsje van Keppel.

Julie Ryder’s practice combines her knowledge of science with textiles and the use of nature as both muse and co-collaborator. Imagery and patterns of her textiles included in the exhibition relate to local colour and place, with dye plants collected locally. Dr Julie Montgarrett (Charles Sturt University) has written extensively on the work of Elsje van Keppel, the Dutch-born Australian textile artist, curator and educator. The influence of van Keppel’s philosophy of materiality has shaped and now widely characterises the non-indigenous fibre and textile art of Australia. Her legacy is evidenced in the links and connections to land and location, to country, created through the intersections of traditional textile methodologies.
