Description

The Gendered Violence Research Network invites you to An analysis of the media coverage of a high profile rape trial: The case of UK footballer Ched Evans

Kathryn Royal, Durham University, UK

The presentation will be introduced by Dr Helen Pringle, School of Social Sciences, UNSW

This presentation will discuss the results from my PhD research, looking at how a high-profile case of sexual violence was reported in UK news media. This will be done using the example of Ched Evans, a footballer found not guilty of rape after a retrial in October 2016, a case which spanned over five years. The research analysed 204 articles from 8 sources of UK news media using guidelines for reporting on violence against women created by the National Union of Journalists. This presentation will explore how these guidelines were largely not followed, leading to a damaging presentation of the victim in the case, and a misrepresentation of the reality of sexual violence.

Kathryn Royal is a final year PhD student at the Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA) at Durham University, UK. Her research is exploring media coverage of sexual violence and how this may affect women who have experienced sexual violence. She is also a long-standing Rape Crisis volunteer.
