Event description
Learn the principles of self-editing - everything you need to know before approaching an editor.

About this event

As you may know, first contact with an editor can point you to publication. A vetting process often begins as editors consider suitable publishers, so you want your manuscript to shine. Sometimes, however, writers expect editors to teach them the basics, but it’s just not their role. Manuscripts littered with common mistakes also communicate that writers haven’t educated themselves and look daunting to industry professionals. This course teaches you what you need to know before spending a cent on editors or assessments.

Learning outcomes:

  • Apply the editing cycle from developmental & structural editing right down through copyediting & proofreading.
  • Establish & access a style sheet, an essential tool for your proofreaders.
  • Tag & resolve common errors.
  • Professionally format your work for submission.
  • Compile a market savvy synopsis that gives the editor & publishers precisely what they want.
  • Hone your expectations of an editor to get the best return.
  • Read, manipulate, accept/reject & apply ‘Track Changes’ left on your draft by an editor.
  • Access top resources like style manuals, etc.

Format:

This is a hybrid workshop with a focus on the sustainability of your writing career; it will be held in-person at Queensland Writers Centre and live streamed simultaneously to an online audience. It is a level 1 course suitable for writers of all levels.

About Lauren:

Lauren Elise Daniels (BA, MFA, Creative Writing) has edited 100+ titles across the fiction and non-fiction genres. While most are traditionally published with Interactive Publications, Hawkeye, Pantera, UQP, and others, Lauren also assists authors who strive for high quality self-publication. She curated the content for Aiki Flinthart’s online course for Queensland Writers Centre, How to Get a Blackbelt in Writing and co-edited Relics, Wrecks and Ruins.

Lauren’s novel, Serpent’s Wake: A Tale for the Bitten shortlisted with Singapore’s Half the World Global Literati Awards and ranked 4th in the People’s Choice. Last year, she co-authored Winning Short Story Competitions: Essential Tools for the Serious Writer.

Lauren runs workshops for the NSW Heroine’s Festival and South Coast Writers Centre, is a literary judge for the Society of Women Writers and Hawkeye, and directs Brisbane Writers Workshop: www.brisbanewriters.com.

About Geneve:

Geneve Flynn is an award-winning speculative fiction editor and author. She has two psychology degrees and only uses them for nefarious purposes.

She co-edited Black Cranes: Tales of Unquiet Women with celebrated New Zealand author and editor Lee Murray. The anthology won the 2020 Bram Stoker Award® and the 2020 Shirley Jackson Award for best anthology. It has also been shortlisted for the British Fantasy Award, Aurealis Award, and Australian Shadows Award. Black Cranes is listed on Tor Nightfire’s Works of Feminist Horror and Locus magazine’s 2020 Recommended Reading List.

Geneve was assistant editor for Relics, Wrecks, and Ruins, a speculative fiction anthology which features authors such as Neil Gaiman, Ken Liu, Robert Silverberg, James (SA) Corey, Lee Murray, Mark Lawrence, Mary Robinette Kowal, and Angela Slatter. The anthology is the legacy of Australian fantasy author Aiki Flinthart, and is in support of the Flinthart Writing Residency with the Queensland Writers Centre.

Geneve’s short stories have been published in various markets, including Flame Tree Publishing, Things in the Well, and PseudoPod. Her latest short story, They Call Me Mother, will appear in Classic Monsters Unleashed with some of the biggest names in horror, including Joe Lansdale, Jonathan Maberry, and Ramsey Campbell.

Geneve loves tales that unsettle, all things writerly, and B-grade action movies. If that sounds like you, check out her website at www.geneveflynn.com.au.
