Event description

Description

This tour will be a treat – you get to see two tiny homes and hear the pitfalls of designing and living in these places.

The first home, illustrates how a shipping container can be converted into a comfortable 20sqm living and sleeping space. However, the owners recommend thinking carefully before seeing shipping containers as the answer to small houses. While they are cheap to purchase they require a lot of deconstruction and reconstruction to make them habitable. They say, the biggest mistake they made was with the insulation. They didn’t make it thick enough.

This one cost about $40,000 to build (this includes a $10,000 cost to buy it). The double glazed windows at $8,000 were the most single expensive individual component.

The container can be beautifully warm on a sunny day in winter (thanks to double glazing) and small north-south access and freezing at night. In summer it gets very hot.

On the same tour you can view a ’90-day’ house. This house was built by the owner’s son while he was working full-time and took 90 days to finish. It cost $10,000 to build.

These two houses sit in the back garden of a relatively small block – 590 sqm.

Also in the garden are edible plants like citrus and fig trees and easy to grow berries like redcurrants, an organic vegetable garden, happy chickens and an aquaponics system.

The cost of the tickets assists SEE-Change Inc to support & inspire communities in creating a sustainable Canberra.
