Event description

Description

Meg and Anne-Marie's house in Hackett was built and situated on their block using solar passive design principles. The architecture firm involved (Strine Environments) designs and builds ecologically sustainable, modular and climate proof homes. These smaller footprint homes, both in the sense of climate adaptation and also physical size, make sustainable housing more affordable yet also comfortable. Whilst the main structures that form the house are prefabricated offsite some alterations to the design were also possible to suit the house to the lifestyle of the occupants.

Meg's horticultural skills are also evident in the gradual transformation of the backyard to a permaculture food forest and of the front yard to thriving native plants and additional landscaping for habitat restoration at various levels. Meg has paid particular attention to the clever use of water and included fascinating elements such as 'hugelkultur' mounds to build healthy soil.
