REALISM PROJECT

Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good, set in Sydney in 1789 and based on the extraordinary novel The Playmaker by Thomas Kenneally, takes us back to our convict past and tells the true story of the first theatrical production that was staged in Australia – performed entirely by convicts.

Written in the 1890s, Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening was once banned due to its celebration of adolescent sexuality and its impassioned attack on conventional morals. It tells of the sexual experimentation of teenagers who have little guidance on how to cope with their growing erotic desires, in a story that remains shockingly contemporary.
