Event description

Description

NOTE: This event has sold out. A second "Photographing Seascapes" workshop has been scheduled for Saturday 4 July. If you'd like to book into this session, click here.

Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Instructor: Seng Mah

"I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying."

So wrote John Mansfield in 1902, encapsulating the draw and romance of the coast for artists and creative souls. The coastal landscape is a popular one among landscape photographers, but it can be a difficult one to shoot and capture.

The "Photographing Seascapes" workshop is about showing you how to shoot and create great seascapes; it's packed with pragmatic tips from balancing foreground and sky exposures, to capturing the movement of waves, to great composition tips to help make your seascapes more visually impacting!

This is a hands-on workshop, where you will be shooting in Perth's northern beaches, with their rugged limestone rocks, swirling waves and, at this time of the year, rocks covered with green weeds. Add the iconic WA sunset into the mix and you have all the elements for a great picture!

We begin with an outline of the thought processes behind shooting and composing seascapes and how to use different lenses to create different impressions of depth and composition. We'll look at the kinds of exposure times that work best with seascapes and how different density of filters can affect these times and hence the appearance of the final image.

Once armed with this knowledge, you'll shoot at and around Trigg Point and Shag Rock in Trigg. photographing some of the location's most iconic buildings framed by water and sky. You'll learn about shooting with the light at your advantage, and how to best position your location for great compositions.

We'll be shooting beyond sunset and into twilight, where we work with the cooler, muted colours that come with the end of day.

This workshop includes two complimentary live webinars:

  • A 30-minute live webinar before the workshop, which will be conducted at 8pm on Thursday 18 June. The webinar will cover the equipment and theory in shooting seascapes and we strongly encourage you to attend this complimentary webinar.
  • A 40-minute live webinar after the workshop (time and date to be confirmed), which will demonstrate techniques for editing seascapes using Lightroom Classic.

Places are limited to only 8 participants, so make sure you book in to avoid disappointment.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
  • Your interchangeable lens camera, battery (including a spare) and memory card/s.
  • A wide angle lens -- at least 24mm for full frame cameras, 16mm for crop frame cameras and 12mm for micro four third cameras.
  • A rage of Neutral Density (ND) filters (at least two of the following: ND8, ND32 or ND64) and a polarising filter. If you are considering purchasing a filter set for this workshop, please contact us for recommendations and a discount code for the H&Y 100mm filter starter kit, which includes three filters and a circular polariser.
  • A stable tripod, preferably with an adjustable ball head. Don't forget to also bring your tripod mount (which screws into the base of your camera).
  • A remote shutter release or cable release (please note that you will need to already be familiar with the use of your shutter release for this workshop, so if you've just purchased one, please take the time to learn how to use it before attending this event).
  • Good walking shoes, water and sunscreen (this is a mostly outdoor event).
  • Microfibre cloth and lens cleaner in case of sea spray.

Please note that this event is scheduled for Sunday 21 June 2020; in the event of inclement weather, it will be re-scheduled for Sunday 5 July 2020. When booking, please make sure you are available on both dates. If the weather on both dates is inclement, then the event will be cancelled and refunded (less the Eventbrite booking fee).
