SCREENWRITERS' BOOTCAMP

with Veny Armanno

Turn those big ideas into a big Hollywood screenplay.

Are you a writer with a great idea for a movie but just don’t know how to start writing it for the big (or smallish) screen? Do you have a book or story that you’d love to adapt into a screenplay but don’t know where to start?

This three-day boot camp will introduce beginning scriptwriters to the basic skills of writing for the screen using the three-act Hollywood feature film as our model. Using various film clips as models and examples, we’ll look at the industry standard format of film scripts, the basics of creating screen-characters, how to write interesting dialogue and how to understand and use film structure. We’ll also discuss aspects of the business of film and working as a professional in scriptwriting.

Optional: If you have a more fleshed-out idea, you may send a 3-4 page summary for Veny to give direct feedback on. This should be sent 2 weeks before the course to admin@qldwriters.org.au, and should consist of the following:

  1. Title
  2. Logline (25-50 words)
  3. Comparisons (one line only)
  4. Long Synopsis (up to about 1000 words, double-spaced, 12-point)

After the bootcamp, participants will have a deeper understanding of the elements listed below.
