Event Details

Are you a counsellor, clinician or GP working with people who have a have problematic substance use, mental health condition or a problem with both? If so, it's likely there will be underlying issues with problem gambling.

To support clinicians to better detect and help their clients with risky gambling behaviours, Lives Lived Well is partnering with the Mackay Hospital and Health Service and the Northern QLD PHN to offer free two Gambling Screening Workshops for clinical practitioners in Mackay. Participants can choose from a morning or afternoon workshop.

Why screen for problem gambling?

Research shows that of those people who have a  gambling problem 58% will also have a problem with drinking or drugs, while 38% will have a mental health condition In addition, of those undergoing substance use treatment, 20-30% will have gambling problems. People need support for each problem if they are to make a full recovery and prevent relapse.

The 90 minute workshop will be delivered by Lives Lived Well's Clinical Services Manager, Gerard Moloney. It will cover:

  • characteristics of problem gambling and the relationship with mental health;

  • the use of the Problem Gambling Severity Index;

  • brief interventions and practice-based strategies to support patients.

If you are interested in this area but unable to attend, Lives Lived Well also offers free online training for service providers. Find our more by emailing

This event is presented in partnership with the Northern Queensland PHN.

Lives Lived Well

Lives Lived Well is a leading Queensland-based, not-for-profit support organisation for people who have problems with alcohol and drugs; and the associated mental health issues.

We work with people directly affected and those who are touched indirectly – like friends and family.

We are driven by a desire to help tackle the root cause, so that we can help reduce harm, aid recovery and inspire positive change.

We operate a wide range of program and services throughout Queensland, both residential and non-residential. Thousands of people pass through our doors each year, often seeking the same things – support, understanding and a chance to change.

While we help through face to face support, our reach is even greater through our phone and group counselling services. We also offer outreach counselling in some communities.

Call us today to see how we can best help you. Phone 1300 727 957.
