Description

Have a script idea but don’t know how to start? Maybe you’ve already written a script and looking to improve on it? Character development? Deepening the story?

The course will cover:

- Introduction to character
- Deepening of character development
- Implementation into script

- Understanding the personal truth for character development
- Difference between fact and fiction in a character development context
- Develop characters that bring your script to life
- 10-15 page script (beginning of a longer story, an extract or a stand-alone piece)

AFTT script writing workshops can help with all these issues and more. Our industry current tutors will help you along every step of the way.


Tutor: Steven Wright

Steve was born in London in 1951. He first came to Australia in 1972. He settled in Sydney in 1980 and has worked as a writer since 1983. During that time he has written books, plays, feature films and television and is represented by the Cameron Creswell Agency. His books include the detective stories: ‘Love, Avalon’, ‘A Drop In The Ocean’, ‘A Break In The Traffic’; and his comic novel, ‘The Life Of Riley’. He has also co-written a biography of stuntman, Grant Page, called ‘Man On Fire: A Stunt Of A Life’. He has also made significant editorial contributions to several books: ‘What The Mother Knew’ by Edmund Tadros and ‘Ashbygate’ by Ross Jones. His plays include ‘Did Somebody Say Something About A Drink Of Bourbon’, and ‘The Joke’ and, for television, he has written episodes of ‘Special Squad’, ‘Rafferty’s Rules’, ‘Police Rescue’, ‘Mortified’ and ‘Stringer’, which he also co-created. He wrote the feature ‘Lilian’s Story’, adapted from the novel by Kate Grenville, and provided Additional Script Material for the feature, ‘Risk’. He has also script edited a number of award winning programmes. ‘Mortified’ received an AFI for Best Children’s Series and was nominated for an International Emmy. ‘Lenny Cahill Shoots Through’ won an AFI for best Television Original and an AWGIE for Best Short Film. Steve has been nominated for an AWGIE twice. ‘Lilian’s Story’ – Best Adapted Screenplay - and ‘Mortified’ – Best Children’s Television ‘C’ Classification. He has assessed scripts for the private and public sector and has taught screenwriting at a number of institutions including NIDA and AFTRS. He currently teaches at AFTT (formerly IFSS) part time. Steve has written a number of commercials for CHOICE – Australia’s leading consumer advocacy group. He has a BA from the Canberra College of Advanced Education in Professional Writing and is a graduate of the One Year Screenwriting Course at the AFTRS. He is an Australian citizen and lives in Darlinghurst where he is currently working on a feature ‘Friends Upstairs’ and several television series. His latest project to air on television is ‘Old School’ which he co-created. It was nominated for an AWGIE for Best Mini-Series (2014).


*Classes will run from 6:00pm - 9:00pm each Thursday night (7/9, 14/9, 21/9, 28/9, 5/10, 12/10) for the 6 weeks.
*All courses will be held on campus at AFTT.
*This course must have a minimum of 8 students to run.
*The content is suitable for students aged 18+.
