The Clipchat lineup

Josh Duck | Head of Engineering | Evolving Abstractions

Developing high quality web applications used to mean understanding browser quirks, web performance, juggling state changes and asynchronous behaviour. Consistently getting all of this right was hard. In this talk we’ll take a look at how React was designed to change the way developers tackle these problems. We’ll dive into the path Facebook followed to create and evolve the library, and how those lessons can be learned and applied to other problem areas.

Josh Duck is the Head of Engineering at Clipchamp, and specialises in leading engineering teams who develop innovative frontend and web technologies. He loves enabling teams to produce advanced technical infrastructure and create amazing user experiences. Prior to Clipchamp, Josh managed Facebook’s Web Performance Team in the USA, before becoming a Frontend Engineering Manager for the ABC where he led the effort to reinvent their frontend architecture. In his spare time Josh enjoys trail running, raising his two daughters, and sketching.

Jeshua Morrissey | Software Engineer | Continuously Releasing a WebApp with Confidence

Come along a journey to design a release management system purpose built for continuous deployment webapps with the goal of reducing toil and increasing confidence and velocity. There’s plenty of guidance on how to manage releases for libraries or utilities, but these techniques can make versioning and releasing a WebApp continuously confusing and error prone. This talk outlines the Clipchamp release process, how it came to be, why it's awesome and where it's headed.

Jeshua is an enthusiastic programmer with a passion for all aspects of software development. He spent four years at Google before joining Clipchamp and has large amounts of experience with operating-system level languages, scripting languages and web technologies. He is particularly skilled in navigating large codebases, developing simple software solutions to difficult problems and working with large teams of diverse individuals.

Peter Laurie | Director of Junta | Beyond Optimising Engineering

Excellent engineering practices are not enough to guarantee business success. In fact, they often get in the way of solving the real problem at hand - building a high performance, high growth business that can scale. Peter will take us through what the real business problems are, and how some small changes in perspective can solve them while still delivering a high quality, well-engineered product.

Peter is the founder of Junta, through which he participates heavily in the innovation ecosystem. A major role that he performs is interfacing between corporates and new ventures. He has coached and advised hundreds of startups and new ventures on how to innovate, implement, and deliver to both consumers and businesses. He has been doing large scale software development for the last 25 years for both enterprise and new ventures. Peter has an MBA from QUT specialising in strategy, entrepreneurship, and microeconomics.

Byron Mejia | Software Engineer | Congratulations on graduating! Let’s begin

Walk through the Clipchamp career journey, through the eyes of a graduate. In this talk, you’ll hear from Byron about his own learning experiences, beginning with his first pull request and introduction to the stack, through to becoming a technical lead at Clipchamp. He’ll uncover the culture, environment and processes at Clipchamp that have helped foster his growth, and what made Clipchamp the attractive option to work for in the technical community.

Byron joined Clipchamp after completing his Computer Science degree at Queensland University of Technology. His current work is focused on Front End Development and he’s developed many skills in his time at Clipchamp. Byron is passionate about helping budding engineers achieve career and life goals, developing software that tells a story, continued learning, dogs and cycling.
