Event description

Description

Scienceability is a project designed to change opinions on who ‘does’ science. In the lead up to National Science Week 2017, we will run six science workshops for people with intellectual disabilities where they will explore and participate in a range of science demonstrations and activities.

All Scienceability participants will have the opportunity (if they wish) to demonstrate their science skills during National Science Week, where the scienceability workshop participants will run a range of science demonstrations and activities for the public, held at the National Capital Exhibition Centre.

Workshop Three - Flight!

Investigate the science behind flight in the third Scienceability workshop of 2017!

Participants will take part in experiments to find out what makes things fly, and how we can make them fly even better! All participants will also receive an additional flight related experiment sheet to take home, and continue the investigation there!

Where: Centre for the Public Awareness of Science (CPAS).

Peter Baume Building #42A
Linnaeus Way

Frequently asked questions

Is this workshop suitable for me/the person I am caring for?

Scienceability workshops are developed for people over the age of 18, with an intellectual disability. If you do not quite fit this criteria, or are not sure if the workshop is going to be too easy/difficult for you, please contact Sian at sian.scienceability@gmail.com

How much does the workshop cost?

All Scienceability workshops are free! Scienceability has received grant funding from the Australian Government as part of the Inspiring Australia – Science Engagement Programme

Is there parking at ANU?

Yes! ANU has free parking over the weekends. You can park in the carpark at the end of North Road and walk to CPAS from there - find the parking and walking route on Google maps here https://goo.gl/J9nWRt

Does my parent/carer need to stay for the workshop?

Your parent or carer is not required to stay through the workshop, but they are welcome to stay if they would like!

How many people can attend a Scienceability workshop?

To ensure the best possible workshop for all participants, only ten people can attend each Scienceability workshop. There will be three Scienceability workshop facilitators at each workshop.

Can I attend all six workshops?

Initially, we'd like people to only register for one or two workshops each, to allow for as many people as possible to attend a Scienceability workshop. If there are still spaces left closer to the events, then you are welcome to register for more!

Do the people running these workshops have experience working with people with disabilities and running science workshops?

They certainly do. Sian Keys, who runs Scienceability, has extensive lived experience working with people with disabilities in a home, work and volunteering capacity. Sian also has a Masters degree in Science Communication Outreach, and has organised and facilitated over 300 science workshops for high school students throughout her career to date. Sian has also previously run science workshops for people with intellectual disabilities, to unanimously positive feedback.

All workshop facilitators have experience developing and delivering science and engineering workshops, training in working with people with disabilities, and valid working with vulnerable people checks.

I have other questions not listed here

No problem! Contact Sian at sian.scienceability@gmail.com , I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
