Event description

Description

Are you fascinated about the world around you, how it works, and our place in it? Georges River Libraries will host free screenings of SCINEMA international science film festival films during National science week. Now in its 14th year, SCINEMA showcases science features, shorts, documentaries, and animated and experimental films from filmmakers around the world.

Expect tales told through the power of the moving image about the long slog and occasional thrill of discovery, the awesome scale of our universe, the beauty of nature, environmental challenges that we face on our planet, and how technology will shape our future.

National science week runs 12-20 August 2017. SCINEMA is presented by Australia’s Science Channel.

Program for Kogarah Library - Space and Sci-Fi

Space

Adrift

Selected for SCINEMA

On March 17th 1958, Vanguard, the first solar-powered satellite, was launched into space. At that time, space junk did not exist. Now, over one hundred million pieces of human-made space junk orbit the Earth. Adrift engages with the mysteries and contradictions of space junk: a sometimes beautiful, but potentially destructive museum of space exploration hurtling above our heads.

A story from space

Selected for SCINEMA

The story is a re-telling of the apollo 11 moon landing, told in a language reminiscent of children's storybooks.

The purple plain

Best Director

How different would things have been if it had been one small step for a woman, and one giant leap for mankind? Inspired by the true story of Mercury 13; the first women who tested for space flight.

The spectators

Selected for SCINEMA

Subtitled (France)

Laura and her husband live on a satellite orbiting around Earth. There, Laura sees her life entirely rebuilt: suburbs, chores, kitchen, television... A huge step back that will instill in her a deep nostalgia for Earth and an intense longing to find the life she really wanted to live.

Destination: Mars

Selected for SCINEMA

DESTINATION: MARS is told through the stories of the men and women whose lives focus on a journey that will likely go down in history alongside Columbus and Magellan. The red planet: humanity's future or grand delusion?

SCI-FI

Einstein-Rosen

Best Shoft Film

Subtitled (Spain)

It’s the summer of 1982. Teo claims he has found a wormhole. His brother Oscar does not believe him… at least not for now.

“A quirkily charming and entertaining film.”
