Event description

Description

The Science Alive! Geelong - High Schools Day will be presented for the first time in 2019. Closed to the general public but FREE and open to all students from Years 7-12 in organized school groups, the event will feature spectacular science shows and energetic young scientists and engineers will give engaging presentations on their study and career pathways. There will also be exhibits and activities from Questacon in Canberra (see their 'Science on the Move' and 'Fascinating Science' travelling exhibitions at www.questacon.edu.au/outreach/travelling-exhibitions) and a wide range of science-realated exhibitors and activities. Expect plenty of action in the Explosive Science Shows and the on-stage short career presentations will aim to highlight the diversity of science and engineering careers. There will be strong representation from the resource and defence industries along with a focus on health science, ICT, animal science, astronomy, engineering, biology, robotics and electronics.

Most importantly there will be many activities for students to DO, not just look at.

Deakin University, The Gordon TAFE, the Geelong Tech School, Museums Victoria and Scienceworks will all have a significant presence together with the event's major sponsors the Naval Group (building Australia's next generation submarines) and APPEA (the oil and gas industry's peak body). OzGrav (the ARC Centre for Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery) will be offering an amazing VR experience which takes students on a journey through our solar system; APPEA will be offering drone workshops; the Brainary and Scienceworks will have interactive robotics displays; Museums Victoria will include dinosaur bones in their display; the Runway Incubator will appeal to budding entrepreneurs by showcasing technically advanced products of local start-ups; bugs n slugs will have an extensive display of invertebrates; and the Australian Society of Microbiology will allow students to observe the bugs you can't see with the naked eye.

A similar event in Adelaide has been running for 13 years and attracts 6,000 students from 80 high schools.

The event will be spread over three levels of the GMHBA Stadium at Kardinia Park, home of the Geelong Cats AFL team. While we may not have to cap numbers it is best to REGISTER NOW to guarantee the involvement of your students. You only need to register ONE ticket for your whole school or class - the registration process will then ask you several questions about your school, number of students, their year level and your expected time of arrival and departure.

Don't hesitate to contact Event Coordinator, Brian Haddy at bhaddy@ozemail.com.au or ph 0413 156 172 if you have any queries. All registrants will receive further information well prior to the event.
